"There is a time to sow and time to reap.
There is a time and purpose for all things under heaven."

There are many important factors in planting and caring for a garden. It is the art of being in balance with nature which will produce a beautiful garden.

The Moon governs growth. Planting is most productive is the lunar influences are considered. We have long heard sayings about planting such as "By the light of the Moon" or "the dark of the Moon" but there is more to planting and gardening than that. These old sayings referred to the phases of the Moon which are the angular relationships of the forces of the Sun and Moon. However, it is also important to consider the nature of the sign of the zodiac through which the Moon is passing.

The Lunar Phases

For best results plant, graft or transplant annuals which bear above-ground crops during the Moon's first and second quarters. (An "annual" is a plant which completes the entire life cycle in one growing season and must be replanted or it must re-seed itself each year.) During the first and second quarters, New Moon to Full Moon,   the Moon is increasing in light. This is known as the waxing Moon.

Following the Full Moon are the third and and the fourth quarters. This phase is the "dark of the Moon" or the waning Moon. The third quarter is the best time for pruning and for the planting of biennials, perennials and bulb and rood crops. These can also be planted in the fourth quarter if necessary. However, the fourth quarter is best suited for tilling and destroying weeds and pests. It is also the best phase for cultivation and harvesting.

Remember, the New Moon to the Full Moon is the time to make new beginning, the time to increase. The Full Moon to the next New Moon is a time to bring affairs together or to a close.

It is interesting to note that the bruised areas of fruit picked in the first and second quarters will rot more easily whereas the bruised areas of fruit picked in the third and fourth quarters will dry. If you don't like to mow your lawn, you can retard its growth by cutting it during the waning Moon, the third and fourth quarters. Conversely, you can stimulate your lawn's growth by cutting it during the waxing Moon, the first and second quarters. Timber will season better if it is cut in the fourth-quarter in a barren sign.

By The Signs

The most fertile signs, the water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, and best for planting. Capricorn, Taurus and Libra are the next best signs. Taurus and Capricorn, which are earth sign, are very good for root crops. Both will produce a strong, hardy plant. Capricorn is excellent for plants which may have to withstand drought. Libra and Taurus are ruled by Venus, the goddess and planet of beauty. For beautiful fragrant flowers plant while the Moon is in Libra or Taurus.

The first day the Moon is in a sign is better from planting than the second. The second day is better than the third.
